I would like to change the power steering in my bmw z3 1.8 but I am not sure what it takes due to the z3 1.8 being quiet rare. I’m pretty sure the engine code is m43b18 any help appreciated

Any good Dexron III automatic transmission fluid - don’t use power steering fluid. Are you sure it’s not just a 1.8 badged car (like mine) which is actually a 1.9 M43. I think the 1.8s were only sold in the US

Well mine has 1.8 badge on it like yours I’m not sure what this means but I am from UK
Also when I look for dexron III on Amazon they are usually for fords - will this be okay?
Changed mine a year ago and it hasn’t blown up yet

A bit of power steering maintenance.
The one aspect of driving my Z3 that I've never been happy with is the steering. Its always felt like hard work and not smooth enough for really confident cornering. I've had an E90 and a F30 previously and these were very good in that respect so I thought the Z3 should be better. In the past...

By the way - will my UK 1999 with 1.8 badge also be a 1.9 like yours then I’m not sure I understand this system
If yours is an early facelift model (registered October 99 so should be) it will be the same as mine. The 1.8 [99-2000] and the 1.9i [2000 onward] have the same engine. Was probably done to differentiate it more from the 2.0 that came out in 99..who knows

Thank you, is head gasket failure common on these as I have heard? Sometimes I get a lot of smoke from the exhaust sometimes its invisible
If you have any mechanical advice it would be greatly appreciated as I am new to this and with this project I have been thrown in the deep end
